Spring Tidying: The Best Way to Clean Shutters
Taking the time for cleaning shutters allows your home to look its best. This season, while spring cleaning your home, remember to include your window treatments. Tidied windows and window treatments invite fresh air and provide a calming sense throughout your space.
At Harmony Blinds and Shutters, we specialize in Hunter Douglas shutters for homeowners near San Diego, California. Today, our team shares their favorite tips on how to clean shutters.
What is the Best Way to Clean Shutters?
The best way to clean your shutters is to make it a habit. Regular maintenance improves their appearance and their longevity. Scheduling time to dust them every two or three weeks or as part of your regular cleaning routine is a good place to start when creating the habit.
If you have kids or grandkids, consider handing them the feather duster and letting them brush the dust off your shutters. They’ll have great fun, and you’ll be creating a healthy habit together.
Cleaning Wood and Composite Shutters
Cleaning your wood shutters, including your composite shutters, starts with preliminary dusting. You can use a feather duster, dry rag, or a can of compressed air to gently blow the dust off of the wood. Then, apply the vacuum cleaner brush attachment gently across your wood shutters for a deeper, monthly, or seasonal clean.
If you notice any splotches, stickiness, or stains, easily remove them with plain, lukewarm water and sponge. Dip the sponge, squeeze it, and gently wipe the louvers clean. For the composite shutters, reduce static cling and repel dust by rubbing a dryer sheet across the louvers after they're clean.
Cleaning Vinyl Shutters
To clean vinyl shutters, start with a gentle dusting. This round involves using a feather duster or a microfiber cloth. Close the louvers almost all the way and gently collect the dust off them. Leaving them a little bit open prevents dust from getting trapped between them. It’s helpful to complete this process regularly, at least every other week.
For deeper spring cleaning, pull out the vacuum brush attachment and lightly remove the dust and anything else on the shutters. You can spot-clean them with lukewarm water, but avoid abrasive cleaners and chemical solvents because they’ll scratch and damage the surface, detracting from their appearance.
When you’ve finished, rub a dryer sheet across the louvers and the sides of your shutters, like the composite shutters.
