Types of Window Shades

Roller Shades
Roller shades are simple flat fabric roll-up shades operated by spring roller, beaded chain & clutch or motorization. While most popular for covering large windows with solar screening materials, roll shades are being used more frequently for any size window where a simple covering is desired (often combined with drapery panels or fabric toppers). There are many fabric choices from sheers to room darkening. Shade material can “cup” at the sides – most notably with lighter weight materials and long lengths.
  • Privacy and Light Control: Varies on material choice from sheer to opaque. Inside mount shades have significant edge gaps.
  • Energy Efficiency: 1-2
  • Cost: $-$$ Motorized: $$$$
Cellular Shades
First introduced by Hunter Douglas over a decade ago (Duette Honeycomb Shades), cellular shades are one of today’s most popular and versatile window coverings. These three dimensional shades have an inner air pocket and they open and close in an “accordion” fashion. Pleat sizes range from 3/8″ to 1-1/4″. Smaller pleat sizes can come in double and triple cell versions for greater insulation value. Most cellular shades are made of cleanable, sun-resistant polyester for long life. These simple, contemporary, versatile shades come in a great variety of colors and textures to the interior while providing a consistent white color to the outside. Other features include single blind coverage for large windows, a top-down/bottom-up feature that allows privacy at the lower portion of the window and an unobstructed window above, and, dual fabric shades. Small pleat versions are an ideal option for French doors or for windows with limited sill depth. Cellular shades are also available in a vertical version for sliders with very compact side stacking.
  • Privacy and Light Control: Available in sheer, semi-sheer, semi-opaque and opaque fabrics. Small light gaps at edges on inside mounts. If selecting cellular shades for room darkening, outside mounting with a 4″ wall overlap is recommended.
  • Energy Efficiency: 2-4
  • Cost: $$-$$$
Roman Shades
Roman shades come in a wide variety of natural and synthetic fabrics. The least expensive Roman shades tend to be unlined polyester or synthetic blends in flat panel or teardrop styles. “Drapery Shop” Romans have more hand work and command a much higher price, but you can choose linings and select from a much wider array of fabrics and design styles. Roman shades are sometimes ordered as decorative top treatments over cellular shades or blinds. Hunter Douglas makes an innovative lined Roman style shade called the “Vignette” that has the unique feature of retracting inside of a fabric covered headrail.
  • Privacy and Light Control: Shades range from semi-sheer to opaque depending on fabric and lining choices.
  • Energy Efficiency: 2-3
  • Cost: $$-$$$$
Woven Wood Shades
Woven wood shades are available in a wide range of natural materials from bamboo and reeds to exotic grasses and can range in look from very rustic to more refined. Woven wood blinds without linings allow varying degrees of filtered light, view and privacy. Because of the nature of the materials, woven wood blinds will have individual character, including defects (beauty marks!). They can also bow, stretch, and, may not hang perfectly flat or even. Because of these qualities, woven wood blinds work best as “outside” mounts. Woven wood materials can also be used for panel tracks to cover sliding doors or large banks of windows. Woven wood blinds are a great way to bring great texture and a touch of nature indoors!
  • Privacy and Light Control: Most materials do not offer night time privacy without linings, which can be semi-opaque or opaque. For more versatility, some woven woods can be ordered with a separately controlled privacy shade mounted behind the woven wood shade.
  • Energy Efficiency: 1-2
  • Cost: $$-$$$$
